Our next Speaker Lunch will be held on June 30th 2025 when Peter Read will be discussing ‘The Stamp That Licked Illiteracy in Britain’.

In May 1840 an inspirational change in social and economic policy occurred. One that was the catalyst for a revolution in communication – the issue of the world’s first self-adhesive postage stamp, with a face value of a Penny and weighing just 0.058 ounces.

Position Vacant – Enthusiastic Post Room Assistant needed to cut postage stamps from imperforate sheets. Accuracy essential. Must have good eye sight and be able to work long dark winter days under candlelight. Full training given, scissors and candles provided. Starting pay, £2.00 per week…Might suit school leaver.
